A while back, when working on my Spotlight-style search field, I created a small image modification for iChat which I’ve decided to share. When using groups of contacts in iChat, the headers for each group are a dull gray color. Thanks to OS X’s application bundles, I was able to easily open all the pieces that make up iChat and modify the header images to look like Spotlight results. Why? I just think it looks better. If you think so too, you can get the files and instructions right here.

what about getting the text to show to the right of the name instad of below? Any way to change the height of the rows?
Which text are you referring to? The “Available” under my name?
I was talking about the away message text.
To have the contacts away message under their name, uncheck the option to show contact images in the show menu.
Additionally, to add more options for customizing the apperance of iChat, use Chax (http://www.ksuther.com/chax/)
I’ve been using Chax since I read your comment, and I absolutely love it! I don’t know how I lived before iChat with tabs!
