ThinkPad 1802 Error Fix

Of all the laptops I’ve worked on, IBM ThinkPads are by far the easiest to disassemble and fix. They’re also pretty tough machines, as they survive substantially more damage than most of the Dell laptops I’ve seen. If I were a full time Windows user (and I’m not, despite the recent number of PC related posts), I would probably consider purchasing a ThinkPad. If it weren’t for one tiny problem, that is…

Most newer ThinkPad models have a Mini-PCI slot and antennae, ready to be equipped with a standard wireless card. Mini-PCI may be unfamiliar to Mac users reading this blog, just as it was to me several months ago. Think of Mini-PCI as an AirPort Extreme sized connector, but standardized such that any manufacturer can create a compatible communications card. While the slot is standardized, IBM insists on crippling it via software to only accept “IBM brand” wireless cards — which are really just OEM cards made by Philips and others. Upon booting a machine with a non-IBM card installed, the following POST error will be displayed:

1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in
Power off and remove the miniPCI network card.

What a sneaky way to lock people into buying an expensive wireless card, when others can be bought for much much lower prices. (I suppose I can’t complain, though, as AirPort Extreme is even more proprietary. Although, I’ve never had the need to use a different wireless card in my PowerBook — I just bought the “whole widget” from Apple and that was that.) Luckily for ThinkPad owners, there exists a small fix for this “1802″ error: a DOS program which will flip a single bit in the CMOS and allow use of any Mini-PCI wireless card. The program, no-1802.com by Tisheng Chen, can be found here. To make running this program easier for myself and others, I’ve prepared a floppy disk image as well as a bootable CD.

Download the CD ISO

Download the Floppy Image

Both files will require unzipping before use (use the free 7-Zip or WinZip). Once unzipped, the CD version (.iso file) can be burned with Disk Utility or Toast on the Mac, or ImgBurn or Nero on the PC. The floppy disk version can be written with Floppy Image for Windows, or dd if=no1802.img of=/dev/fd0 in a *nix environment. The floppy image is a bit-for-bit copy of what I actually had on disk, and the CD version boots and loads the very same floppy into RAM, using a highly customized Ultimate Boot CD. Hopefully this will allow ThinkPad owners to use any wireless cards, and not just those offered by IBM.

If Asus sold motherboards that were only compatible with Asus graphics cards, people would be less likely to buy Asus hardware. If they placed this information in a small footnote and simultaneously listed an AGP slot in the technical specifications, people who had purchased the hardware with the expectation that they could use their existing graphics card with the same chipset would be justifiably angry. The situation is directly analagous. IBM may feel that US law requires them to implement this restriction in the United States. However, failure to clearly advertise this restriction (especially given that most of the world is not covered by FCC regulations) is unacceptable. — Matthew Garrett

5/17/06 Update
I’m glad to see that people are having success with my pre-made wireless card fix. A list of some of the models affected by IBM’s decision can be found here, thanks to Matthew Garrett. He also has few pages with useful technical details on this topic, as well.

8/30/06 Update
For future reference: IBM “high rate” wireless+56K modem combo cards with FRUs 12P3637, 12P3863, 26P8472 and 91P7661 require separate modem drivers (that aren’t part of the “high rate” package). The cards are made by Actiontec, but the the modem portion is made by Agere/Lucent, and the drivers can be found in IBM’s list of downloads for the R32.

9/10/06 Update
This page was linked to at ThinkWiki, where you’ll find even more information on the 1802 error.

  1. Thank you for the images. This was extremely easy to do compared to the other instructions!!
Did this with your image in less than 5 minutes in all.

    Thanks again.

  2. Thanks for the wireless card fix for my R51 ThinkPad. I would have never figured it out on my own although your information was so complete that I now understand what the problem was. Thank You, -Thomas

  3. HELP! This looked awesome in one little file but I’m not good with this stuff- I unzipped, and burned a bootable cd in Nero 6. Am I supposed to mess with the advanced settings? If anyone can help, I’ll give you a HUGE $5 paypal payment!

  4. My guess is that you’re choosing Bootable CD and adding the ISO, as opposed to just burning the ISO outright. While this option is good for burning a bootable CD with existing files, the ISO offered here is an image of the CD ready to be burned as-is. With Nero Burning ROM open, choose “Recorder”, “Burn Image…”, pick the ISO file, and burn. (If you choose bootable CD and add the ISO to the compilation, you’ll actually end up with a bootable CD with an image of another bootable CD inside it…and that won’t work, as you’ve seen.)

  5. Thanks a lot for the floppy image, really! I was vey uppset after a whole day installing the antennas and wifi card when found the 1802 error and thanks to you the day had a happy ending, thanks from Spain!

  6. Hi
Used your CD. Seemed to work fine on my IBM T30. “Found new hardware” but was “unable to install” Tried to use Device Manager to look at the Intel 2915abg but keep getting the Pop up Window “Microsoft Management Controls” with the message MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\devmgmt.msc

  7. It sounds like the CD was able to disable the check, but you might not have the right drivers. Try searching IBM’s site for the card’s FRU and see if you can get the correct driver package.

  8. Thank alot! I was successful with IBM T30

  9. Thanks for all the info and the utilities provided. Before using it I do have one question: how dangerous is it to use this utility? can I cause an irreversible damage to my machine? what should I do if the fix does not work? is it reversible (if so, how)? — Thanks again!

  10. The “no-1802″ software flips a bit in your computer’s CMOS, where your BIOS settings and current real-time clock data are stored.

If it does cause a problem, the changes are not permanent and can be erased by removing your CMOS battery and all other power sources (power adapter and battery). In some ThinkPad models, the tiny quarter-sized battery is under the keyboard, and in others it’s hidden behind a panel on the underside of the laptop. Guides for replacing this battery can be obtained from IBM’s support website, and it is advisable to print out the relevant portions prior to performing the hack if you don’t have another computer handy. Your other preferences such as boot order and current time will be reset if you do this.

In short, though, the change “no-1802″ makes is not permanent and can be undone by removing *all* sources of power.

  11. Thanks again for the detailed reply, sounds like its safe to use. I’ll try it on my X30 and let you know how it works. BTW, does anyone have any experience with the no-1802 on the X30?

  12. So far it seems to be working fine on X30. Thanks!

  13. You da man – it worked straight forward. I got a x31 with an intel 2200bg card. it booted fine and installed the drivers and i was up and running before you could say shananagans! :-) Thanks again!

  14. This is very interesting info. I just purchased a refurbished IBM T30 that has no wireless card. I was wondering why all the ones I saw for sale had ‘b’ cards instead of ‘g’. Would you recommend a good wireless card for me to get, I would like to try the hack with it? Is it something you run once, or on every boot up?

    Thanks.

  15. Just about any MiniPCI wireless card will work. Personally, I like the Intel ones and avoid the Cisco ones, but only because of the more straightforward driver set up and usage.

You run this software once, and only ever need to repeat it if you replace the CMOS battery (which often outlasts the notebook itself).

  16. omg thank you sooooo much for this!!!!! my god i wish i would have stumbled upon this much earlier before ripping through my room to find a floppy drive and tearing apart my comp before to put it in. this was really nice and easy, and stupid me for not finding it earlier!!!!

    THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!!!!

  17. Do you have to remove the network card to run the boot cd? I keep getting the 1802 message.

    Thanks,
    /scott

  18. Can confirm works on my R40 2682-HU2 with

    Intel® PRO/Wireless
    2200BG Network
    Connection

    Drivers from Intel website
    http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-010623.htm

    Excellent job.
    Thank you

  19. NICE!

  20. I confirm that this works on T41 2374-7JG. I replaced the Cisco 802.11b card wuth an Intel 2915ABG card (.11,abg)
Make sure you download latest 2915ABG card software
    http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/pro2915abg/index.htm

    Excellent!!
    Thanks.

  21. Excellent Image. Though it does NOT work with my R32 an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG. :(

  22. I can’t seem to get your file to boot. I’ve copied all the file to a disk, made a bootable disk, copied just the boot “file” contents to a disk. I have even downloaded Image burn, and tried to burn the image to disk. But Nero and Image Burn both tell me that it is an “invalid or unsupported image file format”. Can you PLEASE..help me….

  23. If you’ve copied all the boot disk files to a disk, it sounds like you’re opening the floppy image with the wrong program.

ImgBurn and Nero are for burning the CD ISO image, and the Floppy Image program is for copying the floppy image directly to a floppy disk. With the two options provided, there should be no need to open either of the files unless you’re curious how they work.

Try downloading the CD ISO, unzipping it, then opening the unzipped “.iso” file with ImgBurn, and clicking Burn. Doing so will load the image right onto a CD, bootable and all.

Essentially, the two files above are file-based copies of the CD and floppy I made. There should be no need to make your own bootable CD; Just load the bits provided onto the medium you prefer.

  24. Thanks for the info. What had happened is that after I un-zipped the file, it came up as a WinRar file so I un-zipped it again. Not realizing that it was an ISO file. I can get the cd to boot now but I get an error that says “no valid Fat32 file system on the drive. I’m running Win Xp with a NTFS format. Please tell me that you fix will work for me!! Once again thanks for the help….Scott Oh IBM T30 1.6g p4m

  25. Please disreguard my last question. I found a similar program that will run from Windows.

    Or download at http://www.congenio.de/infos/no1802.com
PS. buffalo G54 on IBM T30 working great

  26. That filesystem error is very odd, as none of the software provided touches the disk, let alone determines any formatting. I think you may still have burned it incorrectly by accident…

  27. Doesn’t work on a Thinkpad X41 (2525-6NH)

  28. great stuff with that ready cd image. good job. worked great on my T41

  29. Thanks for the excellent info. I tried installing my Dell-branded 1450 b/g Broadcom mini pci wireless card into my T30 and got the 1802 error.
WTF I thought. A quick search got me here and I think the boot disk image and easy to follow directions are awesome!
Worked like a charm the 1st time and the card now works great in the T30. Very useful and clear, THANKS!

  30. Works perfect. The card now is 100% functional and working at full 54mbs.

  31. works perfect on T42 with Atheros a/b/g .took one minute or less.Somehow if I plugged the card when Windows XP was in Hibernate modemafter wake-up detected the card without bios modification(maybe helpfull).Choose Atheros 150feet from router still excellent link on 108 Mbps- 9 USD on Ebay.
    Isn’t cool?

  32. burnt to cd and works a treat on T30 with IBM intel pro 2100 download driver from IBM many thanks and thanks to original author too !

  33. I have run the no-1802 utility before on a t30 and it works beautifully. However on this R32, it doesnt seem to set the bit no matter what I do. What is wrong?

    I keep getting the error!
    Thanks.

  34. I ran the iso file on cd on the Lenovo Thinkpad R60, the error message still persist. Could you help me? this is needed for a test enrinvoment where we will test different wireless cards.

    -Thanks, Chris

  35. This does NOT work on my Thinkpad Z60t. Anyway I don’t get that 1802 error, but other things happen:
If I boot with the “wrong” network adaptor installed, a PXE boot sequence comes up at boot time, displayed overlapping with the lock symbol for entering my bootup-password. Even if I don’t enter a password it continues to boot with grub, where I can’t use my keyboard. Linux then boots, but there’s no wireless adapter in lspci. Any ideas/help?

  36. This seems like a simple solution – I’m having a problem still though – the T30 won’t even get to the boot disk CD. I set the 1st boot device to the CD but I get the error before it can even boot. Anyone have any ideas?

  37. Hi,

I am trying to get the no-1802 but the link does not work. Can someone point me to the right link?

    Thanks,

    Scott

  38. http://jcnp.pku.edu.cn/~shadow/1802/ for scott, go to this link of simply type “1802 error” into google and presto.

Guys In regards to my earlier problem:
I ran the iso file on cd on the Lenovo Thinkpad R60, the error message still persist. Could you help me? this is needed for a test enrinvoment where we will test different wireless cards.

Is there a solution for this I ran the ISO file from a bootable CD and it went into the DOS prompt to type “no-1802″ and I did then rebooted soonafter, the card is still not accepting. Any guesses to help me solve this problem, I need to resolve this for my test department at work, help please! :)

  39. Thanks Chris

I use the link and it has the following:

    [DIR] Parent Directory –
    [ ] 1802.com 13-Jun-2004 15:13 18

    [ ] no-1802.com 13-Jun-2004 15:13 18

When I click on no-1802.com it doesn’t let me download anything. I am not very tech oriented so please be a little forgiving if I am doing something wrong. It took me forever to even find this page.

    Thanks again,

    Scott

  40. Please disregard my above post, I just figured it out.

    Thanks,

    Scott

  41. HELP!! I wasn’t sure if I needed to boot the laptop with the CD to run the program, It didn’t seem to do anything so I explorer the CD in Windows and when I reboot the computer will not do anything no error or anything just the fan turns on. I have a T30 and I tried to install an Intel 2200 wireless card.

    Please help!

  42. Thanks for great solution to avoid annoying error!

Worked with my T40 and Intel Pro Wireless 2200bg (+latest drivers).

Still there are minor side effects – the wireless network blue light on the bottom of display seems not to function – may be related to Think Vantage software that does not support the 2200bg card on T40. But the signal is strong and even stronger than new R50 I was able to use at the same time.

It’s worth to mention that I got one confusing error during cd boot but you shouldnt fall into that, during the next power on the 1802 error message was gone ;)

    Thanks!

  43. Little more info how I got the result:

power on -> press F1 to bios menu, set the cd drive to #1 in boot list (actually it was already #1 by default), disable wireless network card on mpci.
power on -> to confirm the 1802 error does not appear as the wireless card is disabled, then insert the bootable cd, shut down.
power on -> let the pc boot the cd, if A:/ appears, then just power off (thats the place I got some error regarding FAT but I ignored it)
power on -> F1 to bios menu, enable wireless network card on mpci.
power on -> the card should be accepted and XP prompts to found new hardware wizard, install the latest drivers from manufacturer and thats it.

This is just for information what worked for me.

  44. I used the no-1802 trick on an R40 and a $19 Atheros a/b/g card I bought off of ebay with great success. The signal is 100% in my bedroom now, whereas it was 42% and reception had been on and off with the Belkin PCMCIA card I was using at that location! The only question is, can this be reversed? Can I just install a bios update and be back to square one?

  45. A BIOS update may well clear out the fix, and so would removing all sources of power from your machine. To do that, unplug the power cord, eject the battery, and unplug the small CMOS battery inside the notebook (often under the keyboard or a panel on the underside of the machine). Tap the power button once or twice to drain all power, and then plug everything back in.

  46. Well once again the world wide web comes to the rescue :-)

I’ve got an IBM T40 2373 rev 14g Installed an PRO/Wireless 2200BG which, funnily is the card IBM told me to get, although I guess they meant their version. For anyone with the same. Here is the events I went through.

Made the CD boot disk, removed the Network card I had just installed. Pressed F1 to go into the BIOS, wierdly this didn’t boot from the CD despite it being the first boot up device, I tried an XP disk to see if it was the disk image; anyway still no joy, so back in the BIOS I disabled all other boot devices except the Cd/DVD rom device, rebooted with the CD image and it ran happily. After I got to the DOS prompt (Flashing Cursor for those of you not techy) and typed exactly as it said on the screen. and it was done. For those of you not used to this you may think it will take some time, but it is virtually instant.
I then powered off, installed the controller card and then rebooted back to windows. and installed the drivers. Works fien and dandy :-)

To answer the question some of you have asked, yes I had to remove the wireless device before I could get to the boot screen.

Many thanks to all for this, and to the person who wrote the BIOS edit and then to this site owner for being kind enough to make the CD image.

    Regards

  47. Glad to hear people are having successful WiFi card instllations :-)

  48. The no-1802 trick doesn’t work on my Thinpad R32. Now the only option I have is learn how to hack BIOS.

  49. I have an hp/compaq nx5000 notebook with a whitelist and a broadcom minipci card to replace the intel card who’s breakdown.
I have error “104 ,Unsupported wireless network device detected. System halted. Remove device and restart ”

My intel pro 2200 have id=”PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4220&SUBSYS_12F6103C”

  50. The NO1802.COM solution works with older ThinkPad BIOS that are wired to require an IBM MPCI adapter (and only those MPCI will control the WiFi LED on the cover, BTW). The newer, larger BIOS systems (Z60, T60 et al) require a different patch, which as of yet I have not found.

  51. Hi guys, Hey i cant seem to get my t30 to accept an intel 2915 abg card. I have gone to ibm, downloaded the latest bios update, then applied the no-1802 bios flash. Installed the newest drivers for the 2915 abg card and the latest version of the intel wireless pro set software. The device installs but the pro/set software will not fully install. I get a page fault in a nonpaged area and it fails to finish. Ive tried many times. Im wondering if any of you have a similar problem and if you have gotten the 2915 abg wireless card to install on the ibm t30. Please let me know if its possible and what the solution is. Thanks in advance.. rick

  52. update… i have gotten the software to install but there is still aproblem. the intel proset cannot find a compatable device… device manager shows the wnic as a 2915abg ( which is correct ) but the device has an error code of 10 ( the device has faild to start ).. hope theres a quick fix.. ill keep working and thanks again in advance to any who can help.

  53. anyone found a workaround for z60 series Thinkpads???

  54. Could you confirm that no-1802 will work on an ibm r40e 2684 L8g i cant find any reference to this particular model thank you .

  55. [...] Men desværre har IBM lÃ¥st BIOS til en (reletivt lille) række netkort og bryder derfor strakts ud en fejl: “1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in – Power off and remove the miniPCI network card”.

  56. I bought an atheros/philips abg card , i guess is similar with the one ibm sells.Installed it in a r40 2681 L7U and of course i got the 1802 . Followed the instructions here , had to boot once with the normal windows after aplying the cd patch and then reboot.Windows detected the card normally but i had to download the latest wi-fi abg drivers from ibm/lenovo website to make it work.Led is working ok and after aplying the latest hotkey driver from the ibm/lenovo website as well Fn+F5 is also working!
Thanks for the info , my only remark is that you most likely will need the new drivers to make it work.

  57. I just wanted to say thanks to you and the writer of this hack (hack being a good thing mind you) for making this available to the online community. It is a service to us all. (as opposed to the dis-service that manufacturers like IBM/Lenovo and HP do to us by forcing us to buy their shit) We…the online community…thank you!

  58. Absolute magic, bought two very cheap Cisco 350 mini PCI cards on eBay and both now working well and accepted as standard IBM/Cisco cards on 2 Thinkpad T30s. “no-1802″ worked flawlessly and drivers downloaded easily from ibm.com.
Many thanks to the author / CD image builder!

  59. WOW – thanks! I bought a T40 and an Intel 2200BG card, which is on the IBM ‘approved’ list, and STILL got the $%#@$%#@1802 error. By chance (well, Google really) found your site, made a boot CD, ran it, and am computing happily. Many many thanks!

  60. Applied this on an r40 2681 with an Atheros 5212 card and it worked flawlessly, thanks!

  61. Perfect!!! I have an IBM Thinkpad X31 (2672-U31) and the no-1802 method got my Intel 2915ABG miniPCI card connected in minutes! Thanks to everyone that has researched and helped solve this problem.

  62. Hello, I own a X30 and (2672-4HA) I would like to upgrade my minPCI card to support wireless G and A if possable via the 2915abg wireless card. I noticed that Lenovo just released an upgraded BIOS Vr 1.09 (June 26, 2006) which, the only changes listed is “Support for IBM 11bg Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter”. Does anyone have experence with this? Will this get rid of the “NO1802″ issue? I cant find a listing on the lenovo site that ref which spicific cards are now suppored 2200bg or 2915abg, or both?

  63. [...] Step 4: Nasty surprise from IBM with 1802 ERROR!It appears that IBM has locked the user out from being able to add their choice of miniPCI adapters.  I found the solution on Command-Tab which talks about an assembler program called no-1802.com.  Command-Tab even has pre-made boot images ready to go so you can make your own boot floppy or boot CD.  I had to remove the Intel miniPCI card first to get the system to even come up but you should run this procedure before you attempt the upgrade to begin with.  Once you boot the CD or floppy, just type no-1802 and it will modify a CMOS setting that you can’t change any other way.  It’s interesting to note that no-1802.com is written in Assembler and only takes up 18 bytes of space.  Once you remove the 1802 restriction on your IBM ThinkPad, you can put any miniPCI card in.  The affected models are listed here. [...]

  64. Installed a Broadcom BCM94309MP (marketed as a Dell Truemobile 1450) on my IBM Thinkpad T42p. The 1802 “error” is yet another disappointment with my beloved ThinkPads (stealing GigaBytes of my HDD so IBM doesn’t have to send out media?!?!?! Changing the form factor of the T series rather than starting a new series? And now going the way of Apple, locking me out of my computer’s PCI slot?!?!?!)
no-1802.com combined with Dell’s drivers did the trick. No more blinking LED but, 54Mbps, OSx86 compatibility, and 3x times the range I had with the Intel WM3B2100.

  65. Too Easy! Buffalo WLI-MPCI-G54 802.11b/g mini pci card in Thinkpad T30 (2637).
    ..
Only thing I can add is that IBM website states to use 802.11G you have to upgrade BIOS to latest version ( & upgrade embedded controller)- that took 5 mins.
…. Also, run “no-1802″ before you install your new card. I ran it with old card still in and it worked fine. Then I removed old card and put new one in.

  66. Has anyone placed an Intel 2915abg into an X30 and get it to work? Need to know if I should just get the 2200 or go for the 2915??

  67. Help!!

I recently bought an Intel Pro 2915abg for my Toshiba Satllate A15-S127. I downloaded the latest driver from INTEL. the card shows “error code 10 and not able to run” at device magager. OS is XP.

    Please advise.

  68. Absolutely brilliant, Thankyou so much.
I would have been lost with this one!
IBM T30 now working a treat.
Bournemouth UK is now happy, Cheers

  69. Thanks for sorting this out, took me longer to find this page (through my normal recursive google search technique) than actually fixing the problem using your image. The image part is really useful, took the scary factor out of reflashing the bios!

My T30 now working like a dream!

  70. MANY thanks! Just downloaded this and installed and I could of held my breath the time it took for it to work. Thought it was too good to be true, its not, works GREAT! I’ve got a Thinkpad T30 and bought a 2200BG off ebay for $9.. 13 shipped.. works EXCELLENT!! Thanks again!!!

  71. Hi there,

thank you very much for this elegant and easy solution.
After waiting a few years for fast internet access, my customer would have killed me for buying the “wrong” wireless adapter.

It´s kind of funny: the ThinkPad R40 has no “Centrino” label because no WLAN-Adapter installed. After inserting the Intel “Centrino”-labeled 2200BG MiniPCI-Card, it doesn´t work. I would really like to know, which MiniPCI-Card is built into centrino-laptops from IBM when the genuine Centrino-WLAN is “unauthorized”.

Well.. no-1802 worked fine, the Boot-CD is brillant. Thank you, once again!

  72. GREEEAAAAAAT!

Been fiddeling for about 5-6 hours before I stumbled upon this site. If I can only get my ethernet to stop saying “cable not connected”, I’ll be fully satisfied with my purchase.

    Once again GREEEAAAAAAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  73. Hi to everybody, I have an r-40 2681-q5u, I try to install an Intel 2200 b/g I recieve the 1802 message, I take out the card run the no-1802 program and put the card again, and I saw the 1802 again, when i see the directory of the cd only appears no-1802.img, I try with the dos version only a black screen, and the same 1802, where is the problem, really I preffer the internal cards than the pcmcia, they have more antenna then transmit and recieve better ??,
    Helps are greated.

    thanks.

  74. YOU R THE MASTER!!!!!

Can’t Thankyou Enough! CD ISO Worked great on T30 with the cheap card I got for $9 (Dell)Intel 802.11 B/G
WM3A2200BG and generic intel driver found here.
    http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/cs-010623.htm

  75. You are genius. Thanks for the image file (.iso). Your method is very easy.

I have IBM Thinkpad R40 2682-K2G and recently I bought expensive Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2915ABG mini PCI card and after connected to my laptop got the same error 1802 at startup…I was shocked at that time but thanks your website came on Google search and I followed your simple steps and now I’m using my SKY wireless broadband on my machine:).

  76. Anyone has sucess in instalation on a R32? exists another way to do this?
    thanks to all.

  77. YES – ThinkPad R40 Type 2681 and Intel PRO/Wireless 3B 2100 Mini PCI card (WM3B2100NA)and XP Pro – had ERROR 1802 – ran No-1802 and loaded drivers – IT WORKS – WELL DONE!!!! and THANKS

  78. Thank You for the help!!!!!!!!!!!!! TP40 2374-GG2 and IBM 11b/g Wireless Lan…it works now. Good not to have done a Bios Update!!!!

  79. Thumbs up & kudos! Worked like a charm. Sincere thanks, you’ve saved me from a lot of pain and frustration.

  80. Imaging. Takes so little time to get IBM T30 and intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG working in the wireless mode. I’m very happy ;-) thank you, thank you.

  81. I ran it on my A31 while I’m waiting to get my Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG. After you type “no-1802″ at the dos prompt, is it successful as long as you get the “A:\” back? I don’t have the card yet, so I can’t test. I want to make sure its fine before I install the new card.

  82. Just an update, it worked. My A31 now has the Intel 2200bg

  83. Thanks for the utility, but doesn’t work with my R32. Any suggestions?

  84. hello there, the programme worked surprisely, really grateful.but now the wireless is working but not the ethernet. any idea?

    mine is t30

    cheers…

    Aeon

  85. What a great service you’ve provided, making this CMOS patch available (and going to the trouble of making a bootable CD of it available). Many thanks from someone who’s saved many hours as a result of your work.

  86. A31p here…used the Intel 2200 B/G card. Booted off the CD, ran the patch. Installed the card, Windows booted just fine. Installed the drivers that came with the card and was browsing away inside of a minute. Great stuff; thanks for posting a iso image!

  87. I tried this with my T40 running UBUNTU and it worked first time though I was confused as there seems to be no BIOS command for enabling Wireless. But many thanks for the help.

  88. YESS – Worked on an T42 model: 2373 – BX9

    works like a charm.

thanks for the bootable img. Saves me a lot of time. (Less argue with the woman)

    Greetings from Amsterdam, Holland, Europe.

  89. This worked great on my daughters R40, but It does not on My R32. Has anyone found a way to disable 1802 on the R32 model???

  90. Worked flawlessly on a T30 (2.0GHz P4/512MB RAM/20GB/etc.). Thank you for such a valuable service to help out “non power users” like myself. I’m a Mac person mainly and we don’t have to do these kinds of DOS hacks, but I was glad this one was there! Tried this with two different mini-PCI cards. Thank you thank you!

  91. Great img. 1802 error went away, but cant seem
to find the right driver. T30,intel 2915abg mini wireless card. Anyone have any ideas.

  92. Have you tried plugging in an ethernet cable to the built in network adapter and then running Microsoft update to check for Hardware updates?

  93. Earlyer in this forum “peter ” mentioned a link to Intels driver page
Mayby you can find it there.

  94. http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/pro2915abg/index.htm

  95. Thanks, packaging of the simple tool was super and worked as advertised.

  96. Hello I’m fighting with 1802 problem about one month already. no-1802 doesn’t work on t60. Any suggestions?

  97. The img worked fine.
Tried all intel drivers for this card (intel 2915abg mini wireless card). All i get is
!This device cannot start (code 10)
Any other ideas on how to get this card working.

    TMc

  98. thanks no restriction more.
when i start the laptop i get a warning that i am using two ethernet adapters (01c9 more than one …)
the card i am using is gigabyte gn-wi01 ht.

  99. is there a way to make this tool work on the more recent thinkpads, like T60,R60 etc. would it be too complicated?

  100. works great on IBM T41. the wifi card is Broadcom DW1350 B/G The model is BCM94306MPSG. thanks

  101. One more!

I just successfully used it on an A31p (2653-R3U) to enable an Intel a/b/g card (FRU 27K9936).

  102. I just downloaded the no-1802.com file to my desktop in XP Pro. Thinking it was a text file, I double clicked on it. Of course, I now know it was an executable file and it ran, bringing up the DOS window within Windows for a brief moment.

It didn’t change my CMOS to exclude the 1802 error message, but now it takes my computer 90 seconds to begin to load the taskbar and desktop icons after the desktop image loads. Then it works normally. Any suggestions as to how to fix the 90 second delay? PC Doctor and a full virus scan produced nothing.

    Tim

  103. For future reference, the no-1802.com file as well as the floppy and CD images I put together are all intended to be used outside of Windows, as the low-level access necessary isn’t available within today’s multi-tasking systems.

You’re best off just downloading and burning the CD image and following the onscreen instructions instead of running the no-1802.com file yourself. The images I’ve prepared are really quite straightforward :-)

  104. Thank you for helping others
My problem is different, I have a T30 2366 and bought the cisco card. My problem is that on my computer I have spanish language and the instructions on the lenovo site to install the driver are in english. Anyway they are very complicated for my computer knowledge. I downloaded the driver and have it on my hard disk but Its very dificult to fallow the instructions because I can’t match the names, please help

    Reverend Luis Mercado
  105. It doesn’t appear to work on an HP pavilion zt3000. I booted to the disk, and executed the program, still get the error. Tried it with and without the Intel card in there. No luck.

  106. To my knowledge, the disks are only designed to work with ThinkPad CMOS settings. I’m not sure if other manufacturers use the same memory layout or not.

  107. Thank you very much for this great share. But it is not useful for R32 user. Cause it is not applicable on R32’s. I have one and tried this method. I’m still getting the 1802 err message.

  108. Incredible.

Just used this on a T30 with an Intel 2200BG Pro card. Many thanks. So simple and quick I didn’t believe it until I rebooted. Many thanks.

  109. Thanks, best advice i’ve found and the iso worked great. YOU ROCK…….

  110. Has anyone ever got a Intel 2915abg working in a T30?
Yes I have done the 1802 fix.

  111. i am not able to download the cdrom iso image. it stops downloading at 84%, can someone email it to me.thanks

  112. Thanks so much. I purchased a Broadcom card from eBay and installed it on my R40 2896-GZU. Your download worked perfectly and my internet connection is so much better and faster now than with the external Linksys card. I am so pleased wit the end result hat I am purchasing another one for my wife’s X30 although installation will not be as easy as it did not come with a built-in antenna. Again, thanks a lot.

  113. Thank you so very much! Everything worked like a charm and took less than 5 minutes!!! Great job!

  114. It worked great for me. I have the Thinkpad A31 (2652-Q3U). The only problem I have, which I’m still searching for a solution, is the error 10 – This device cannot start message. I tried the clean install of Windows XP Pro with no success.

  115. I have an IBM T42 and tried installing an Intel WM3B2200BGMWXF IEEE 802.11b/g Mini PCI Wireless Network Connection card using The iso image here and resultant disk seemed to get stuck in the booting process. I waited a good 10 minutes then lost my patience. Here’s what I did to make it work though. Make sure you leave the original 802.11b card in place so that you can boot into dos with no problems.

1.Install latest BIOS file from Lenovo and execute then Get file no-1802.com from this web site or anywhere else you can find it. http://jcnp.pku.edu.cn/~shadow/1802/no-1802.com
    2. Copy it to the root of your C:\ drive
    3. Boot into DOS with bootable diskette , CD or flash drive. (Make sure you set the bios to boot from that device first, My T42 was already set to boot from CD)
I used the UBCD Ultimate boot CD but any bootable that can get you to a dos prompt will do.
4 Once at DOS prompt, E: or F: or whatever then type C:\ enter to switch to the root of c: where we put the no-1802 file a couple of steps back. C:\
    5. At C:\ prompt type no-1802 and enter (this runs no-1802.com , very quickly I might add.
    6. Now take out the old card b card and put in the new one.( Hopefully you already had a b card in there otherwise running the antenna wires is a bit of a pain.(Lenovos) website has service manual that can show you how.
    7. Boot normally off of internal hard drive.
    8. Windows found a new device as soon as I booted (also didn’t get the annoying 1802 error:
    9. I went into control panel and did add new hardware.
Intel wireless card was in the list so I installed the drivers from the included CD.
    10. Rebooted and was able to connect to my wireless network. Seems to have great range and speed.

I got the card from Newegg.com for 28.99. Newegg is awesome!

  116. Thank you very much. You did a great job to gave us very clean instruction. My T30 work great with Intel 2200G now. Agian thank so much

  117. Downloaded the .ISO image, started up the computer, updated the BIOS, and it worked like a charm. Thanks for this great tool!!!

  118. Has anyone found a solution for the IBM R32 yet?
If you do please e-mail me at jlrobins@pacifier.com

  119. I was lucky to find this site!!!Your program worked perfectly with my IBM T40 (2373-94G) and a Gigabyte GN-WI01HT (Atheros 5006XS a/b/g card) !!!!
The only thing I needed was the bootcd to run the no1802.com ….. (i didn`t have the 01c9 error fortunately!!!)
I bought the card for 23€ here in Greece , so all I can say is a big THANK YOU!!!!

  120. I was very disappointed when I saw the message on the schreen of my T40
Did not accept my new Gigabyte GN-WI01HT as an authorized device.
So I typed the error message in google and there was the solution.
Burning the bootable dos cdrom succeeded the second time.

So Manny thanks for your work to make thinks easy for persons like me.
    Fred from the Ntherlands.

  121. IBM’s behavior is more pernicious even than you guys think. I took my wireless card from an IBM R40 that had died (card worked perfectly) and transplanted it to a newly purchased refurbished T23. Got the error message. Does IBM seriously expect us to believe that the FCC would be up in arms because a card that worked in an R40 would also work in a T23? If IBM were still in business, this would make a great class-action lawsuit. Anyway, haven’t tried the hack yet, but will as soon as I get back from the day’s grind. Thanks for the great and helpful (I hope! :-) post.

  122. OK, they are still in business though Lenovo now sells their laptops. Unfortunately I need a “victim” to agree to be a plaintiff before a suit can be filed (as I bought mine secondhand). Any takers?

  123. Thanks for your work on this issue. Please do you know why a non- IBM hard drive will not work on T42 even the same model # as that of IBM?
    Thanks.

  124. The trick does not work with my R32.
    It worked with a X24 and a R40.

If someone found a solution for the R32,
    I would be happy.

  125. Short of some odd-ball compatibility reason, any standard laptop drive should work with the T42.

I distinctly recall installing Seagate and Hitachi drives in T42s in the past, and they worked identically to the IBM-branded Hitachi drives.

Perhaps the particular hard drive you’re attempting to use has a problem?

  126. I have used a bootable floppy version (USB floppy drive) of no-1802 several times on T40/41/42. I just make sure there is no mini-PCI card in the slot until after it has been run. It works with every type of B and BG card I have tried. The only thing is, I have never had the little WiFi flickering light working with an “unauthorised” card. Any ideas?

  127. Regarding a hard drive not working in a T42. I have found that on T41 and T42 it is very tricky to exactly position the hard drive. This could be due to the difference built into them to allow for the “Active Protection” system. The female socket that the HDD pins go into appears to be on some sort of flexible mounting. Try putting the HDD in without the caddy. (You will maybe need to stick a bit of tape to it to pull it back out)

  128. Worked on a T30.
    Thank you.

  129. It worked on my t40 but i can’t get the wireless light to turn on. Any suggetions?

    It worked - T H A N K Y O U
  130. [...] Command-Tab Unauthorized Wireless CardsTechnology and Mac geekery. One part exuberance, two parts obsession. Of all the laptops I ve worked on, IBM ThinkPads are by far the easiest to disassemble and fix. [...]

  131. Thanks so much for the ISO image. Worked great on my T40 2373-8cu. I was able to successfully install the Intel PRO 2200BG card (which is ironically sold by IBM with their “magical” version – which is exactly the same). Thanks again – I owe you one!

  132. Worked a treat on my T41 after buying a so called “authorised” card from ebay. Well done!

  133. Works great !!!!!
    IBM R40

    – Thanks –

  134. hello m8s,
thanks to the anonymous programmer. The cd-iso to solve the no1802 problem on my ibm-thinkpad t40 works fine.
    best regards
    Joerg

I got a problem with my T-22 from ibm. Suddenly the screen is frozen. By reboot all LEDs are blincing rhythmical. Has anyone an idea what the reason is? The backup battery is ok!

  135. I Just wanted to extend a thank you for taking the time to publish a working solution to fix this particular problem.

In my opinion, IBM’s abhorrent tactics of squeezing “yet another dollar” from the consumer under the guise of “maintaining quality by limiting use of non IBM products” is disgusting. Delighted to say that bootable CD image worked perfectly for me. I am now running on both XP and Ubuntu Linux 7.04 on my Thinkpad X31.

  136. Just wanted to say thanks for the program.

Tried installing the Intel 2200 B/G from my Thinkpad X31 into my A31p 2653-CU5 model. Got the 1802 error. Removed the card from the A31p.

Downloaded and booted the floppy disk version on the A31p. Reinstalled the Intel 2200 B/G card. Works like a charm! (Signal kinda low, cause I’ve got no antenna installed in the screen yet, but wanted to make sure the fix worked first before I tore the display apart to do the antenna install.)

    Thanks again.

  137. Hi, those who have T40s and T42s, were you able to get your wifi led working after the upgrade? Are there any workarounds to it?

    Thanks

  138. Thank you so much for the image of the bootable CD.

I was able to replace the Cisco Aironet card in my T30 with and Intel 2200BG.

Would’ve been much harder without this!

  139. If I can get this hack to work with my X31 and Philips wifi card, will all the Thinkpad wifi stuff work, like the Wifi LED, IBM ThinkVantage utility and wifi switch?? Thanks!

  140. Fixed the problem in 5 mins. had tried a couple other soultuions, but could not get a boot CD to allow me to run no-1802. yours just worked. Thanks

  141. hello ..
    i have a question ..
i have a Intel 2915 mini-mci card .. but i need it in my PC Motherboard is Gigabute 7N400 Pro 2.
i Have a Adapter minipci to pci .. but when i install the driver in device manager stay yellow mark “Devuce cennot start.
so .. can i use this image to fix bios or this is only for LapTop users ..
    regards

  142. Worked like a charm on my T41p using a Dell Intel 2200 b/g wireless adapter. Many many thanks, Tony

  143. I used a floppy with DOS 6.22 and another floppy with no-1802 on my IBM G40 and it worked. Go to the Phoenix Network.com and download a generic driver for your Atheros mini pci and that’s all there is to it. Oh, the wireless LED under the pc screen doesn’t work but…

  144. I just want to thank you for creating the no-1802 bootable DOS CD. It worked perfectly with the Gigabyte GN-WI01HT I bought for my T40.

Now if I could only get my hands on a program that would make the LED indicators and the F5 function work, I’d be in heaven

  145. Got it to work on a TP T40. Can use any card now. Using MSI G wireless.

You are a lifesaver(not the good-tasting candy). The file worked to perfection. It’s people like you that help the little stick to corporate america. Thanks a bunch.

  146. Many thanks, worked like a charm on my T30 with my intel 2200bg card.

  147. I keep trying to download the CD ISO, but I’m getting a file is invalid or corrupt message. Does anyone have any ideas on what I’m doing wrong. It looks like this process should be pretty simple.

  148. Has anyone tried it on a T43? Any chance it will work?

  149. worked well on my TP X40 2386 -ME DA HAPPY CAMPER NOW 8)

  150. It worked on my TP T40. The 1802 error is gone.
However, can’t have my Wireless card working.
Device manager always is showing a yellow image for the card. What else could I check.?
(I have been to Lenovo website and downloaded the drivers but didn’t work).
    Thanks.

  151. Hello,

I have T30 as well but can’t get it to work. The laptop worked fine and just started the error out of nowhere, and it has the same mini pci card it had when I got it. Anyway, I’m pretty sure I burned the cd correctly using imgburn, yet the error still persists.

I notice some had to remove the card totally, and then use the boot disk, but I’m not tech saavy enough to dismantle/put it back together, and I wouldn’t know what it looked like anyway. Is there a way to just disable it. I went into bios and changed the boot order, tried disabling everything else as well but to no avail. What am I doing wrong?

Btw, I’m not completely sure on the specs because this is a used laptop that I won in a raffle, but it did work before and I haven’t changed anything. Any help is appreciated.

    K

  152. Bought an x31 ex-lease on eBay, didn’t come with a wireless card so I bought an Intel 2200bg and then I discovered the horror of the 1802 error. Downloaded your iso, burned the disk, booted and ran the little app. “Is that all there is to it?” I wondered. Well, yeah, that’s it. One little bit. Who knew?

BTW, it’s a 2672-C2M with 3.02 bios (fresh) and XP Pro. Life is good again.

    Many thanks.

  153. I don’t think the no-1802 patch works on NTFS formatted Thinkpad. On my X30, when trying to apply the patch, it states “no valid FAT32 file system on drive”, then asks me to type in “no 1802″. I’ve put in the new wireless card but to no avail can I get past the 1802 error message. Can anyone confirm that the “no-1802″ will work on a NTFS formatted drive?

  154. It should not matter what filesystem the hard drive is using — the CD and floppy are self-contained images that do not tamper with your hard drive or operating system. You could run either with or without a hard drive installed. A simple reboot might solve the issue.

  155. not sure if the ‘no 1802′ worked or not. i’d been trying to install the drivers for intel 8200 card when the card in my laptop was an 8100. had to take the laptop apart to learn this leason…

    either way, this site helped!

    thank you!

  156. oops

    i wanted to say 2200 and 2100 not 8200 and 8100

  157. Burned and ran the ISO version on a T30 (2366-9FU)…popped in a Dell TrueMobile 1150 MPCI card, Windows XP installed it in 30 seconds.

    Beautiful.

Now on to eBay to get a better card. Thanks to all the contributers.

  158. Thanks for the great job, it works fine for X32, 2672-ICB, with an intel 2200BG mini pci, from a Medion laptop. But the light on the botom of the screen when switching by Fn-F5 the card ON/OFF is always off, even if the combination of the keys works, any solution for this. Thanks.

  159. I used the floppy image to remove the 1802 code on my A31 2653-CU3 and A31p 2653-R8U to install a generic Intel 2200BG card, and it worked flawlessly and painlessly. It also worked on the A31p without a hard drive installed. Thanks!

  160. Is there any work around for thinkpad T60?

  161. Fighting this problem on a T60, is there anyone who knows about a solution to get rid of the 1802 message on a T60??

    Please help!!!!

  162. I have several questions.

1.) Does anyone know if the Lenovo 3000 series has this Bios Check?

2.) If so, does anyone know if the bios layout is one that is compatible with the no-1802 bios mod?

  163. I have a couple questions. I burned the .iso file to a bootable disc and popped in in my T30 and it seemed to run, the screen ran so fast i could not read everything. And then it automatically rebooted. i popped the disc out and shut down the computer and installed the wireless card inside the cover underneath and when i booted the computer it still gave me the 1802 error. can you please help me. Is there something i have to do once i have ran the iso file?? Thank you for any assistance.

  164. Question:
Does anyone know how to install the antenna wires to
a wireless minipc card? I found a card, ran the fix,
but could’nt find the wires to connect to it. It won’t
work without them. I get a “missing connection” error.
Im using an IBM R40e and it didn’t originally have a card in it.

  165. Hey, thanks for the solution. I have a Thinkpad T41 and the CD ISO solution worked great. IBM should be ashamed of themselves. Thanks to guys like you, we aren’t the lemmings they want us to be. Great JOB!!

  166. T60 Please!!!

  167. WOW!!!! I MEAN.. WOW!!! YOU ROCK!!!! Bow down to you. You turned my frown upside down! I thought my R40 had no hope until you showed me that it can be done. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

  168. The iso-cd version worked fine on my X30, 2672-4BU. I was shortly in doubt, though, because I got the failure code “no valid FAT-system detected”, when I ran the program.
This was of course because I have a NTFS-formatted harddisk with XP. But the “no-1802″ program does not touch the harddisk, so the failure can be disregarded.
Another thing is that the “no-1802″ program is done so fast, that you think it has not run, but it did.
    I found a wireless pci-card, pro/wireless 2915abg, and it works now.
One funny thing, though, is that the Thinkvantage Access Connection program does not work afterwards. Still, I can set up a wireless profile with Windows XP without problems.
I spent several hours trying to make Access Connection work, but in vain.
Perhaps one of you smart guys have a suggestion…?

best regards and thanks to this site for making this hack possible.
    /Kent

  169. I just did this on a refurb laptop I was looking to sell with a miniPCI wifi card.

Worked awesome, way to go.. this utility is amazing. Something that actually does what it claims it will do.

    Chris

  170. Successfully applied to ThinkPad X31 (2673-C2G) and Intel 2100 3B adapter.
Device is working now, but there is a problem with Fn+F5 and WLAN LED, as it was mentioned above several times. Any solutions?
But anyway, thanks a lot for the patch!!

  171. Trying to get this card to work on a laptop running debian linux. Tried the Matthew Garret version but cannot get it to compile with out alot of errors. Should I be able to boot to this version and run it on my R40?

  172. Worked like a champ with my T-40. Just have to be sure to create iso to cd as directed above. When cd has finished booting message will appear that asks if you want to run no-1802 but it ran when cd booted. I’m really pleased to finally be rid of that 802.11b cisco card. Thank-You

  173. Oh, forgot to mention what new mini pci wireless card I installed. It was a MSI 6833A. I too no longer have support for the little wireless led but no problem I know its working thats all I care about. Thanx again.

  174. Great Solution. Work liked a charm on my T30 with broadcom 4318. and ubuntuo Thanks!!!!!!!! Robert

  175. worked thinkpad r50p with intel 2915abg

  176. Great solution, works and is very easy to use!!
    Gracias

  177. to add: works with T40, card is recognized under WIN XP SP 2 as Intel 2200 BG (Was mounted in a Dell Latidtude 620)

  178. Worked perfectly on my R40 and Intel 2200bg.
Thanks so much for all your work, it is greatly appreciated!

  179. You may be getting sick of hearing this by now, but THANK YOU!!! I thought I had the upgrade for my T40 researched fairly well and found a great deal (<$30) for a real Intel 2200B/G card on Amazon and was a bit surprised when I ran into the 1802 error. I found this post, swapped the cards back, ran the program and it works. Fn-5 can not control the power on the B/G card–I get an error saying I need to update the driver. I’ve updated just about everything but have a hunch that there may not be a T40 compatible driver for this function. I’ll be checking back here from time to time just in case. (FYI, I’m running XP Pro and BIOS 3.21

  180. Works on R50 (1830 48G) too. Thanks.

  181. Hi !

thanks su much for this wonderfull tool that perfectly works, so fast and easy, wonderfull !
no more wifi card rejected by big blue , cool.
worked for me with T30, T41 and A31, no problem, after
the patch, they’ll eat any wifi card.
    thanks again for your help.

  182. I have a slight problem, I get that error message but the thing is that I dont have any network card plugged into the port, never have. It just popped up one day without me having changed anything the previous days, anyone knows what the problem could be?
    (got an R40 btw)

  183. For the umpteenth time: thanks much!

Got an X31 (2885-PWU) with a stock Intel 2100b card. Found mention on several sites that a Intel 2200bg would work with some BIOS hacking. Found your site, got a cheap 2200 card, and followed many of the helpful hints here. You wouldn’t think it’d be that easy, would you?

Now I’m surfing at full 54Mb/s in glorious 802.11g with Ubuntu 7.10 and no annoying BIOS error! Very sweet…

  184. Many thanks for the ISO, did the job in seconds (Thinkpad R40e).
Theres not enough people like yourself in this world!

  185. Please any help…
    My CD doesn’t boot.
After downloading no-1802-cd.zip,unzipping it,I burnt it with Nero. Now I’ve 3 folders and 3 files on the CD. The folders are ISOLINUX, IMAGES,BOOT. The files are mkisfos.exe,build.bat,boot.catalog. The thinkpad is model T41 and the bios is set to boot from CD first.

    Is there anything wrong ?
    Any hint will be helpful.

  186. Sorry… now it is bootable…

  187. So there is no fix for the T60 out there?

  188. IBM G40 2388-3SG work fine. thanx

  189. Works excellent on my T41. Have done the patch first – then removed the old mini PCI and replaced by a GIGASET-WI01GS. After powering up, XP found the new hardware and asked for the new driver.

    That’s it.

  190. Please any help…

  191. Hi,
I managed to make the CD to boot. The rest of the instalation is simple. I am very grateful to Collin for providing such a wonderful solution.

    Best Regards

  192. I use the CD version on my T30 and it worked. But I have broadcom bcm4306 wireless card and the dell drivers wont work on the ibm, and unfortenally there is no other XP drivers for this card.:((

  193. Worked on T40 with a Broadcom bcm94306mp (Dell True Mobile 1300 from a Inspiron 5100) Had to manualy install the driver as driver could not be automaticaly found. Constantly (consistently) connecting at 54 Mbps. Thanks

  194. I received the unauthorized network card message on my laptop(IBM T30 2366), when attempting to install a new Gigabyte MiniPCI adapter(GN-WI01GS). I’m so glad I found your fix. The boot CD did the trick, I’m wireless once again, thank you.

  195. Well done. I get rid of 1802 error on my IBM T40 while installing atheros card. So simple to use. Would be also working with other cards.

  196. Fantastic! Success on a IBM T30 and Intel 2200bg card! Thanks!

  197. no-1802 image is great.in seconds i loaded on my t30. but after reboot..it show 01c9 warning”found two ethernet devices adn remove one”
if i press ESC..then t30 is booting normally. how to ge rid off this?
    pl help

  198. I’ve got IBM X40 (2386-XX3) from ebay, it havent got any mini card on it. I bought the Intel 2200bg (original from Toshiba) and use the mothod 1802 via Flopy drive.
Wonderful pass the error message then boot in windows, then download driver from intel and work straight away…well signal compare with my old D-link 624 and netgear WPNT511…
    thanks u so much.
    Tomy

  199. Really need this for the t60p:(

  200. Wow! Ingenius, you saved the Live of My Thinkpad X40. I just wanted to throw it away, because this crapy ideas from the IBM Sales Managers…

Thanks a lot man, works fine!

    Thinkpad X40 2371 from 2006

  201. Confirmed work:
    Thinkpad R40
    Intel PRO 2200BG

    Many thanks!!!!!!!

  202. Works great on my IBM R40. But the Broadcom modem has terrible signal strength. Not sure I’ll continue to use it.

  204. Hi

Just to let you know it worked with my t30.

    Thanks

  205. To whom may provide some help,

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X61. Came with ABG only wireless….
I purchased a Intel Wireless Card 4965AGN, whcich enables N feature. When I physically intalled this card I get the 1802 message, and am unable to boot.

The interesting thing, is that in the X61 there are 2 slots availble under the keyboard. While facing the computer on the laeft side is the secodn slot. When I mount the card on this second slot the system boots and installs the card. However the card cannot be activated.

As it seems that the n0-1802 fix is not applicable for X series, and since I can see and access the card with the second slot, I was wondering if someone could tell me how to write to the new card itslef and modify the new car (4965AGN.). So that I can use this card with the N feature?

Thank you again for any information you may provide to resolve this issue, I really appreciate it.

  206. anyone with x31 and cisco mpi350 aironet wireless card got it working?

  207. Went to 4 laptop repair shops and not one had a solution. Bought r50 1830 w1z with dell intel 2200 abg minipci that didn’t work for cheap “1802 error” ran the boot program and whaa-laaa!! Thank you

  208. You are the freaking MAN !!!

My stock card died today, so I replaced it with a 2200BG that I had laying around. I was unaware of this issue until I go smacked with the 1802 error.

The jcnp.pku.edu.cn website is refernenced in many places but seems to be inaccessable.

Your pre-build CD just saved my ASS !!!

I need to be onsite at a clients in 6 hours and thought that I was going to be screwed.

    THANKS !!!!!

    Dave

  209. That’ it,

my T30 is now working very well.

  214. Thank you so much you’re a God send.

  215. Working like a charm on the T42 2373-6UU !
    Thanks so much.

  216. I ran it on my T40 while I’m waiting to get my Intel PRO/Wireless 2100(from Dell). After you type “no-1802? at the dos prompt, is it successful as long as you get the “A:\ back? I don’t have the card yet, so I can’t test. I want to make sure its fine before I install the new card.

  217. What am I doing wrong? I downloaded the no-1802, unziped it and burned it on a CD. It will boot up my IBM ThinkPad G40, but it gives me an A:\ Prompt. I type in no-1802 and it says it is invalid. How can I get this thing to go forward with this like everyone else on the forum???

  218. Thanks a lot.

no1802.com worked for me on a X31 2672-FG2 with Intel P/W 2200BG instead of the OEM Cisco MPI350.

Notes: – the Wireless LED doesn’t work
    - the boot logo changed from “Pentium M inside” to “Intel Centrino Mobile Technology”

  219. The A:\ that comes up after you type no-1802 tells you that it’s done.

    Worked fine on T40 2373 XP sp1 with an intel pro/wireless 2915agb.

    Thanks, you’re a life saver!

  220. Thanks for the patch, it really work, my thinkpad is a T41p with Intel Pro wireless 2100 3b. Greetings from Mexico City

  222. Thanks for the CD iso, it works on my T40 with a 2200bg wifi card.

  223. Thx for the iso, works fine on IBM TP R40 and with the WLAN NIC from a defective Linksys WRT54G Router. Used Broadcom BCM94301mp 314016 driver. All works fine except for the Wifi Led. But who cares?

  224. Does anyone know if I can use this patch on a x61 tablet?

Would it be dangerous to use it?

  225. I tried it and it does not work (for x61 tablet)

  226. thanks. works perfect on my t42. upgraded to intel 2200 card.
t42 has latest IBM bios too, so no differences in bit location on the newer bios’s :)
same problem with wifi light though – always off. who cares really though; just set windows to always show NIC connection in taskbar. also fn+F5 doesnt seem to turn on/off the NIC – always ‘on’. again a small price to pay for getting away from 2100b to 2200bg card.

  227. Hello,

I have the same problem with a evo N620C

  238. I have a ThinkPad A31p 2653-R9U with the combo wi-fi modem card. Also the ethernet and bluetooth daughter cards. I am looking for an upgrade of this miniPCI card but am not sure what I need. Can go either way with non-IBM solution using individual vendor’s drivers but would prefer an IBM solution, if possible.

Also, am looking for the 1GB memory chips to bring the machine to 2GB RAM. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

  239. It worked on a T30 (1.8Ghz) with an Intel 2200BG WIFI card
    I used your iso CD

  240. Hello

I’m a complete newb with computers but I have a hand me down t-30 and I am getting the 1802 error. Can someone explain in dummy step by step language how to get the cd disk to boot? You hit f1, got that, but how do you disable the wlan? Do you go to config? Someone mention the mpci, where? Someone mentioned booting to dos but I have no idea how to get to the prompt? ANy help out there?

    Thanks

  241. Hi:
I’m getting the 1802 error on a T40-2373. I’m trying to burn the .iso file (It’s a WinRAR file, right?). I’m using Nero and it’s asking if I want to burn a Data disk or a Bootable data disk. Which should I choose? After I burn the CD, all I need to do is boot from it?
    Thanks
    Adrian

  242. The 1802 hack worked for me! I used the CD ISO image, which was fast and easy (thanks!)

Target was IBM thinkpad R40 type 2681 but using IBM original issue wireless card type IntelPro LAN 2100 3B (IBM FRU 91P7267) taken from Centrino thinkpad type 2897.

I downloaded Lenovo driver 1rwc89ww which is the specified driver for this wireless card, but notes (and ‘wireless ethernet options’ document) state the 2681 is not compatible with this driver/card. Strangely, the ethernet options doc also states the 2897 type from which I took the card originally also is not compatible.

The hack resolved the 1802 error, and the driver worked fine. I did have problems originally (couldn’t connect to network reliably) but swapped a different IntelPro 2100 3B card which is working fine.

    Yipee!

  243. Worked great on a T41 2379-DJU with an Intel 2200BG card!

I decided to live on the edge and didn’t even remove the new card – just disabled it in the bios and re-enabled it in the BIOS. IBM’s wireless LED doesn’t work, but I expected that after reading all the other postings.

    Thanks again!

  244. Used the ISO image and it worked great!!!

    IBM T30 2366-86U…free at last!

  245. Thanks very much,I just burned the image in the cd and run in my T40 laptop the “error 1802″ gone and the Wifi starts to work fine.
Thanks very much for for this great working software.

  246. I used it and I believe it got “working” because the system was able to find the Broadcom card I put it but then the system froze and each time I try to boot after that it gets to the “Welcome” screen then stops. Any ideas?

  249. @Bobet: You might want to check the WiFi antenna cables and make sure they’re securely connected to the antenna plugs on the card…

  250. Thank you, the fix worked on my ThinkPad T42 2373 4WU, using an Intel 2200BG card.

  251. Thank you, the fix worked on my ThinkPad T30.

  253. HP presario f505, it seems about the same problem on this it´s not recognice by the bios or windows dont eaven ask for driver, and the light is red and sould be blue, did anyone try this on HP presario?
I hope you understend my english…
    good work

  254. Installed a 2915ABG in a T40. Your .iso worked perfectly. Thank you.

  255. So simple, so easy, thank you very much. I am one of the happy user, man.
My T41 works with original miniPCI, after got problem doing upgrade of BIOS etc

  256. Many thanks for sharing this Collin!! I purchased a Dell TrueMobile 1370 Wireless WiFi Card – DW1370 from E-Bay as my IBM T30 laptop did not come with a built in wireless card and I wanted a true wirelss integrated solution. I was caught off guard when I encountered this unauthorized card error and not knowing what to do I was reserved to swallow my losses. But then out of curiosity I decided to search google for a solution and came across your article about the fix. Many thanks again. No more error!!!

  257. Awesome fix. Thanks a million. Will this keep after a BIOS update on a T40?

  258. Great Tool thanks for your work.

  259. Worked wonderfully. I’d been bellyaching over this for the better part of a day. Thank you!

  260. Collin: would this work on a newer HP laptop with the 104 unsupported wireless error message. I know it specifically says IBM thinkpad and I know the error message can be resolved with a BIOS hack, but that is a little dangerous as opposed to your method

  261. I just tried this fix on a new Lenovo IdeaPad Y510, but it failed to work. Just passing along info for anyone with a newer Lenovo notebook.

  262. Worked on R50e and X31 with Intel BG 2200! Thank you!

  263. YOU´RE A GENIUS. I WAS USING AN ADAPTER (NOT IBM) I´VE CHANGED THE HARD DISK AND SUDDENLY THE 1802 ERROR APPEARED. YOUR CD FIX WORKED JUST GREAT. THANKS A LOT FROM ARGENTINA.

  264. Hi,

I just download the file and i make the boot cd.
It starts on dos mode….Can some body explain me what will i do to complete it?

  265. Works great – don’t run the files inside windows at all. It has to be inside pure vanilla dos, not a dos window.

  266. Any luck on the T23 ?

  267. Worked like a charm on my T42 2373-m33
    with a intel pro 2200bg
Love the internet for this kind of stuff
    Thanks

  268. Will this work on R40 for \n cards????????

  269. @Hank: There are some reports of it working on R40 systems, and if I recall correctly, I used it on a R40 once, as well.

  270. Do you have any recommendations for an a/b/g/n card?

  271. I got a X31 off ebay that came up with the 1802 error, sold as “booting fine”. Had to crack the keyboard off and remove the internal card, then boot to your iso, apply fix, reapply card and reassemble. The time you spent on this made my life a lot easier. Now I have a $200 ubuntu book instead of a lengthy paypal argument. WIN. (ibm FAIL).

  272. Thanks a lot! Very useful.

  273. I can’t get this thing to boot…every time I try and boot from the CD-ROM it takes me to windows…I have an X30! I burnt the disc using Nero from my desktop and for some reason it won’t work…What am I doing wrong or what am I not doing?

  274. Worked great on our t40 equipped with an hp wlan w500 atheros card I grabbed from a compaq nc6000. Had to install the latest hp network driver for it.

  275. IBM T42 w/ Philips a/b/g. Work great and thank you so much for the bootable CD.

  276. Thanks for the iso image , straight to use, works fine on a X31 (a model with that failsafe enabled, that is, because i have two and the same card works in one but not in the other).

  277. Is there any saluction for the x41 to fix this error?

  278. Hi

    Wonderfuld, worked like a charm on a R40e(*) and a T40.

*) Turned out that the R40e did not have the antenna cable installed, but I was able to fix that as well :-)

They also have a PCI-E whitelist, unfortunately. :( Specifically, I’m planning on trying to use an “IBM Wireless LAN Adapter ThinkPad 11a/b/g Mfr P/N 39T5578″ in an Ideapad Y510. Should it maybe just work without the fix anyways, since it’s already Lenovo branded??

    Thanks

  281. Hi, I have a T30. I’ve never installed a new network card but still I get the error 1802 while booting. It was caused when i loaded setep default in CMOS. I tried to use the (.iso) and floppy image but cant even make it to the boot screen. Any ideas? Its not even my laptop so if anyone can help I would really appreciate:)

  282. this was like so much good shit! worked like a dream! thanks a lot!

  283. IBM T40 (2373-7CU), Intel 2200BG. Work 100%.

  284. Thanks so much! This worked GREAT! It fixed my ThinkPad R32.

  285. Great job ! It works perfectly (IBM T40). Thanks a lot !

  286. You Beauty, it worked it a treat on my T40. Thanks very much for taking the effort to make the CD.

  287. This thread is so valued! Thanks.
Has anyone tried it on an R31 yet?

  288. It works perfect with my T40. Thanks! You are best!

  289. Worked perfectly on ThinkPad X40. Thanks a lot.

  290. this is nice!! thank you very much, I will be sending all my friends here.

  291. If anyone is interested in the UK i have a genuine FRU:39t0389 IBM 2915ABG wireless card up for grabs so if you cannot get your wireless card to work in your laptop then give me a email cheeky2@talk21.com

  292. Will this fix work on a T43?

  293. Thank you VERY much from morocco, good job

  294. Here with my T43, and no reply to my query “will this fix a T43?”, I tried the fix. I downloaded the “CD ISO”, unzipped it, and then had “no-1802.iso” file. I burned the iso onto a cd, and that produced various directories and files. I popped the cd into the T43,booted to a c:\ prompt (actually a:\) (?), with instructions to enter the command “no-1802″ at the A:\ prompt. I did, and did “enter”. I immediately got the a:\ prompt again, and nothing else. So I powered down, removed covers, pulled the dead wifi card (FRU 27K9932, which does not give error message) out, installed another wifi card (FRU 91P7267), reassembled, powered up, and got the 1802 error message. No joy. can anyone offer help? mgm.ii@sbcglobal.net

  295. I have an IBM Thinkpad X40 with factory-installed 802.11g modem. `The other day, the wireless was shut off and wouldn’t start, so I tried to reboot–the boot was aborted due to the 1802 error. After a week, that problem went away but now is back. Could this mean my CMOS battery is going? And if I can’t boot the machine, how do I get it to load your fix file from an external hard drive?

  296. I forgot to click “Notify me”

  297. @Ivan: It sure sounds like your CMOS battery could be going. Has your system also forgotten the time recently?

To run the fix while getting the error, you’d have to temporarily remove the card. But, since yours is factory installed, I’d contact IBM before getting out the screwdriver set. If the card is the one that shipped with the machine, that’s their problem to fix, not yours to hack around. Unless it’s out of warranty, in which case… open that thing up! ;)

  298. Hi, I have the same problem as Ivan, but sinse mine ws out of warranty i opened the computer and removed the card. After a restart it came up with a new message that a PCI dev. with serial port made a conflict etc. so now if you look to Norway you can see a flying R51 in the horizon :-(
(I was told by IBM that the motherboard was gone)

  299. It has worked with T30 2366-51U and Broadcom B/G 4318. Thank you very much!

  300. just curious, i have a t30 and thinking about doing this.

i am looking at the Intel 2200BG Pro card, i see some on ebay that are pulled from other systems. So, if i buy this card, do i just go onto intel’s website to download the driver or do i need to get it from ibm website.

    please advise.

    Thank You.

  301. Thinh,

you should download the driver from Intel website. But if you would have the 1802 Error, just patch your T30 as described here and install the driver. Hope this helps.

  302. thanks belinmoskau, i will have to try and locate a card and give it a shot.

    thanks again.

    thinh

    GOD BLESS YOU

  304. WOW! This was the first fix that actually WORKED. Thank yo ufor putting all the information and links in one spot for a rookie like me. I am in your debt. All the best and be blessed. -John

  305. WOOHOO… it works. I got a Intel 2200bg card from ebay. and it works great on my T30, even faster than the pcmcia card. No, i have much more space in my carrying case without the old card sticking out of the side. Thanks, for all your help. I just wanted to mention to who are going to try this fix. when you boot the cd and type in no 1802, it seems like nothing happens but after you reboot the system with the card it in it. the error message goes away and allows you to point the the driver.

    Thanks again.

  306. i have an ibm thinkpad R40 laptop then when it hangs up i rathered to turned it off by removing the battery then suddenly when i turned on again the powe and then it says that no operating system found..what do i do??

  309. Hi there, I will wondering if you could help me with 1802 error. I use the cd iso file but doesnt boot up. Could you give me the 1802 error file because we you click in the 1802 error file, the error message appear. It look like that the file is not there anymore.

Again, I will appreciate your help.

    Thanks

  310. DOS-version worked like a charm on T40p 2374-EG0 + Intel2200BG. Thanks for the tip!

  311. Thanks a lot! Worked perfectly on IBM T30 2367-88G, bios 2.10 (1IET71WW) 2006-16-06. I used the CD method and typed “no-1802″ at dos a:\ Now I’m just trying to find AW06PCIAG atheros drivers :)

    Cheers!

  312. dosent work on IBM R52 now i search a bios for this ????

  313. Had an old ‘b’ Cisco 350 card in a defunct IBM X30 I’ve been it bringing back to life slowly. Final step was to swap the original 350 for an Intel 2200bg and right away the 1802 error showed up. Found this site and downloaded Imgburn to get the CD iso file on a new CD (stand alone DOS link didn’t work for me either). After rebooting with that in the ultrabase drive and typing ‘no-1802′, another reboot gave no more error. Loaded the latest Intel drivers for XP Pro and IT’S ALIVE!!! Got into my home WPA2 wireless and enter this message with no issues. Simply fantastic.

  314. problem :
Loading boot sector on ibm X32

    Thanks for your soft !

  315. Cool Man. the iso works like magic on my T30 2366-81A to be precise. Just boot and say the magic words. Wow!!!!

  318. Hi,

Really looking forward to testing this solution, but am I supposed to shut down and boot from the CD? Or should I run the program after booting the normal way?

    Thanks
    Magnus

  319. Excellent solution for a stupid problem. I can confirm that this solution works fine for Thinkpad X31 2672-58G 1802 Error.

Thanks for all efforts, I appreciate it.

  320. Thinkpad R52

This patch does not do the job on my R52 machine.
Does anyone know a modified patch to work with the R52 model?

  321. Hi, I created the image with FloppyImage program and I can’t get the program to work/boot. I connected the Floppy drive, and chose to use a temporary boot device using the blue Access IBM button and all I get is a blank black screen. No cursor blinking.

I also tried to let it boot by itself without doing anything (after I checked that the USB FDD TEAC Floppy Drive. When I do this it does displays the “ERROR 1802: Unauthorized network….” error again.

    Any help would be appreciated!!!

  322. ^To add:

When I choose to use a temporary boot device, the computer beeps quickly twice and THEN displays the blank black screen…

  323. It made my day! Thanks, my T40 was in the shop getting reballed and they flashed the BIOS, then my wireless didn’t work with an HP card, but all good now :)

  324. I would like to report a succesfoul BIOS modification using floppy. As a future reference for IBM R40e users I can say that models 2684 and 2685 are sharing the same BIOS and Embedded Controller so this patch can be applied to all R40es. My attempt was on a R40e 2684-MG2 with latest BIOS (1.38) and latest Embedded Controller (1.04).

  325. It was done with the floppy image in one minute, perfect, thanks!
    Notebook: IBM A31p, Mini-PCI Card: Broadcom :-)

  326. Worked Great on my Thinkpad T41. I’m just sorry I had to waste a CD on this.

  327. This patch worked with my T40!!! Strange thing though is that I put a older wireless B toshiba card and did not get the 1802 error. I did get the the error when I put a newer HP broadcom b/g card in it.

  328. I got the 1802 error after I put in an Intel Pro/Wireless 2915ABG in an IBM Thinkpad T30 type 2366. The bootable CD worked good. Thanks!

  329. Thanxx,

it also runs with T41 2373-221 mainbord

    CAN YOU ASSIST ME PLEASE

  334. Great! T30 with 2200 worksThanks a lot guys

  335. Re: 331, 333.
As far as I know you have to boot the Thinkpad from a floppy rather than a CD.
    Remove the wireless card.
Press f12 from the boot screen and select to boot from floppy drive.
At this stage you should also make sure the system time is correct.
If it is not then maybe the cmos battery is needing replaced also.
From the A: prompt type “no-1802″

    Power down the Thinkpad.
When you restart the Thinkpad should boot normally.

    Hope this is helpful.

  336. Worked Great Thanks!

T30, Intel 2200BG card (which can be had cheap on ebay these days), booted from .iso CD. Piece of cake.

You do need to remove the card or else you can’t boot.

Also, there is no feedback when you run the executable. So, when you type “no-1802″ from the DOS prompt you’ve committed to running it.

  337. Works great on USB-Stick! You don’t have to burn a CD.
    # dd if=Desktop/no1802.img of=/dev/sdb bs=1024

    Many thanks!!!

  338. Bought a used R40e on ebay. It had no wireless card so I bought this one

    http://3btech.net/hpbc8054wimi.html

Installed it, got the 1802 error, and used the bootable CD to fix it. Drivers installed just fine in XP. However, the computer can’t find any wireless networks. Any idea why?

  339. Hi,
just to say that it works fine for T23 !!!

    Many thanks for the patch

  340. Hi, I have tried to start the boot up with the cd. It seems like its not working. Maybe I am not starting it in the correct order. Anyone that could assist me please. (R40 ThinkPad)

  341. thanks a lot for the easy description and the bootable-cd-image. works fine and takes about 3 minutes. big up!

  342. would just like to say thak you so much for all the hard work that you must have had to put into this program. It works like a dream and i am finally able to enjoy wifi without a silly pcmcia card sticking out the side

    thank you so much!!

  343. it works on T40 2373-8U0

    1. install the card into Minipci slot.
    2. enter in bios and disable Wireless lan
    3. boot to dos
    4. run no1802.com . u il get a message starting with “no-error bit…” – thats ok
    5. reboot and enable from bios Wireless lan.
    6. install drivers
    7. thats it

    PS. Thanks to all.

  344. Hi

Anyone tried this on a T500? I would like to install a Intel Wifi Link 5100 model 512AN_MMW, but I get the 1802 error with this device… on the other hand, I’m pretty anxious about messing with the bios… but on the other hand, this seems to be one of two solutions, where the other will be to alter the device id it self… and can’t find the information neccesary to do this…

  345. Implemented on IBM X31 – WORKS! THANK YOU A LOT!

  346. To Fix Newer Modles (T43 and up) you will need to hunt down the No-1802 ZENDER BIOS for your model. It is a hacked bios with the error check patched. you will have to flash it to your computer.

    thinkpads.com

  347. R40 model 2683, works perfect, many thanks for posting this.

  348. You´re Phoda!!!!Works perfect with my Thinkpad-G40 Type:2388. Download the image file, and image to bootable files converter. Floppy created. Remove your Wi-fi adapter, and boot from floppy drive. All works alone. Put the wi-fi card.
    Thanks a lot, from Brazil!!!!

  349. A few years ago I made a Windows version of the 1802 fix. With it there is no need to burn a CD or make a floppy disk. Simply remove the offending card, boot to Windows and run the app, then shutdown and reinsert the card. Unlike no-1802.com, with it you get indications of the status, whether the error is enabled or disabled. The program consists of an executable file and a driver file. Just unzip both files to the same directory or unzip the driver somewhere in your path, like to \Windows or \Windows\System32, etc. Note that because this program writes directly to BIOS, some anti-virus programs report this as a virus. This is a false report. The program is named Fix1802. I’ve uploaded it to MegaUpload. You can download it here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8NNARYYE

If you use an Atheros card you will likely also get an 01C9, More than one Ethernet devices, error. This and the 1802 error can be fixed by using the 01C9 fix Live CD, which I believe is available for download on ThinkWiki (search for 01C9). This is a bootable CD image with Linux installed. Boot up with the CD, and if you haven’t already done the 1802 fix, do that first, then install the card and reboot and do the 01C9 fix. This will modify the EEPROM on the Atheros card to eliminate the error. It works great. I just bought 10 Philips a/b/g cards for use in T30 systems I’m rebuilding and it fixed them right up. I found the ThinkWiki page. Here’s the link: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_error_01C9_-_More_than_one_Ethernet_devices.

  350. I ran the CD ISO for a Thinkpad R32 type 2658 J3U for an AMBIT Microsystems Wireless card. I had to download and install the driver manually for this wireless card but I was able to get the wireless working. One problem occurred – on start up I get an “0251 sys CMOS checksum bad error” and sent directly to BIOS setup. If I exit the BIOS the machine works fine. Cannot get around this 0251 error though. Suggestions?

  351. Hi, I confirm the iso-cd worked perfectly on my T40 type 2373.
a trick: to avoid dismounting the new Wifi-minipci card blocking the boot, just go in the BIOS (F1 at power-up)go in the network menu and disable the wifi-card. hit F10 (save and exit) confirm and reboot with the no-1802 CD in the tray closed, let the cd boot, apply the patch, reboot, go back in the BIOS, reactivate the wifi in the network, F10 again, confirm, reboot and Voilà! you have done it :o) Many many thanks for your wonderfull work it gave life again to my T40 waiting in standby for a solution since 4 month! What a relief :o))

  352. I used your NO1802 com file on my Thinkpad T30. Worked as a charm. Shutdown the computer. Installed the wificard (802.11 bg from T42). Started in windows and installed driver. Everything works perfectly. Thanks a million!

  355. I have osx on my x30, when I boot with the .img file nothing happens and osx boots…does windows need to be installed? I also read above about easy to follow images….where are they I cant find them! Help please!

  356. Guys

Just to be clear when I download the cd iso and unzip (on osx) I then get a folder called cd rom. Inside that are some folders and files. Is it the file no1082.img in the image folder that I am supposed to use? I have burnt this to dvd several times but it wont work, must it be a cdrom……….please help asap……..Thanks

  357. I am relatively computer illiterate, but I changed nothing about my computer and I’m getting the 1802 error. I have no idea what a miniPCI network card is, so I definitely didn’t add one. I can’t get my computer to start up past this error screen. Please tell me what to do! Thanks!

  358. Hi all,
this CD image worked great on my X40 – now I run cheap a/b/g card w/o any problem. Whole process took about 5 mins – incl burning.
My thanks go to the author!

Joemac: you should try burning CD instead of DVD. Don§t worry which file to use to update BIOS – just burn unzipped image as CD in NERO etc. Set correct boot sequence in ntb BIOS (first CD then HDD) and go on with booting!
    Have a good luck !
    OndraS

  359. Emmy: most probably your WiFi miniPCI card has serious problems or it was replaced with a “non IBM authorized card”.
Try this “no1802″ utility. If you fail to prepare the bootable CD then ask any experienced of yours.
If you still get 1802 message after it then you should probably replace your miniPCI wifi as it is most probably damaged.

If you are still experiencing problems, write me an email: zabred(et)seznam(dot)cz

  360. Thinkpad R50 1883 CG3 Intel WIFI Thanks a milll =)

  361. Hi, Thank you very much from Germany.
My R40 now have no need on a pcmcia card.
    Very nice CD-Image.
    Great Work!

  362. I got it to work on a T30. I had to remove the card which is located underneath the panel with 3 screws in it but you only need to undo 2. The card was the top card with two connectors on it, main and aux which just pull off.

With the card out I created a “Bootable CD” in nero with the no-1802 iso file. It is important that you make a bootable CD or it will not work.

I then went in to the bios pressing F1 at startup then in boot/startup I disabled everything except for the CD drive.

Rebooted the machine and it took me to the A: prompt. Typed no-1802 in and pressed enter, nothing appeared to happen. In anycase I shut the PC down plugged the card back in, removed the CD, and changed the bios back so it boots off the HDD and the problem was solved.

    Thanks!

  363. Hi Ondras

Burnt to cd, no difference. Took off osx an reinstalled windows on x40…..still no luck! I am now downloading nero to burn this image on a pc instead of a mac, thats the only difference i see…………

  364. Hi All, this approach is NOT WORKING on ThinkPad T500. I’ve created bootable USB drive, and bootable CD, tried to load from both devices and applying the no1802 program… After that I’ve installed newly 5350 Wifi/WiMAX adapter and the 1802 error was still hanging… Looks like problem in T500 bios.

  365. Just wanted to leave a note to say thanks; I’ve used the ISO on a T41 2373-SG1 and it appears to have worked like an absolute charm. The machine is now completely 1802-less and whining for a driver disk! Collin, you rock.

  366. Eventually worked on my T42, but creating a bootable CD wasn’t, for some reason, straightforward. I used Nero 7; here’s what I needed to do (after wasting 4 CDs, but hey-ho):
    Download no-1802.iso from
Open Nero 7>choose DC from the dropdown (centre, top)>hover over the “data” icon (looks like a Notepad icon)>choose “Make Bootable CD”. This will open Nero Burning ROM. Under “Source of boot image data, dot “Image file”; the filepath should read something like “C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\DosBootimage.IMA”; if it doesn’t, browse to the stored Nero location. Set your Boot locale.
Click on the ‘Open’ radio button in either “New Compilation” or “Nero Burning ROM” window (or File>Open / Ctr-O) and browse to where you saved, then double-click “no-1802.iso”. Check “Determine maximum speed” under “Actions” and click “Burn” button.

Hope this comment saves others some CDs!

  367. Oops! The comment saver didn’t store my link to no-1802.iso
And 1st paragraph should read “CD”, not “DC”!

A great free alternative to Nero is Active@ISO Burner from cnet.com; just Google “active iso burner” or go to download.cnet.com and search ‘active iso burner’. Free and a doddle to use.

  397. thanks. i work on five or six old x31s and ran into an IBM marked card Phillips Wireless abg card that was probably a knock off. This card gave the same error on all of my x31s, even on machines that had similar Philips cards.

    the patch works great.

  398. I hate this…
Thanks for the solution will try it. The funny thing is that I have a legit IBM card and suddenly after a driver (official) update it stopped working with the 1802 error. I worked around it by removing the card, booting into windows and then inserting it – risky but works so far… strange too.

  403. Hi everybody!!
    Very nice image you create!!
    Works like a charm on a r40 with asus wl38g v2…
But i got a problem now (Dunno if it come from this).
The battery is correctely detected, and in good health bus is not charging anymore…
I discovered this probleme after 1802 fix flash,so i’m just wondering if someone experienced the same issue…
    Thanks for your work!!

  404. Nice….I swapped a t41 screen onto my R51….I needed to use the dremel tool and some creativity, but it actually fit fairly good….lol..anyway, as you can guess the wireless card attached to the screen from the t41 brought up the error…5 minutes of google searching had me downloading your iso, a minute later I was booting again WITH the wireless card enabled..hehe…one comment I would add…throw some output at the end of the execution..like “Finished”…lol

  405. Hi,
I am having the same problem with my T61.

Will this work on Lenovo T61 ????

  406. Post #46 did it for me. Thanks Dai Bach…my T40 is behaving now playing nicely with new WiFi hardware.

  407. I want to thank the folks here for having/leaving this info up along with the No-1802 info and images. I have had a 2200BG card around forever to go into an A31p 2653-N5U and finally did it tonight. I used the bootable CD ISO from here, unplugged the card. It ran and returned to an A:/. Opened the bottom back up and slid the card back into place and booted fine. Got the latest Intel drivers from Intel for the card and they installed without a hitch. I now have a strong 54Mbps signal. I was concerned the 2200BG card I had didn’t have a connector for an added power cable the original card did, but the new card doesn’t need it.

Again, my thanks to all for their assistance on this one.

  408. Works like a charm. just installed a hp card…..
    Thank you……

  409. Very useful infomation. one question before I replace the wifi card in my t40, after this program, can I still disable the wifi in the bios? thanks

  410. Works!
    Thnkz m8,greetings from Greece.

  411. The best solution, works “no problemmo”

    Jan Arnts (Netherlands)
  412. Did not work on T500. Thanks for the file though, this is good work. Maybe someday a T500 fix will appear that is this easy. For now I’ll go shopping for the Intel 4965AG N that came out of this (ruined while replacing broken LCD).

  413. A very big thanks for this page :-)

    IBM R40 + Intel 2200BG Sorted.

First download and burn the iso for a bootable CD.
    2) power down R40 and remove the wifi card
only because it will error out with the 1802 message and halt the boot process.

    3) set bios to boot from CD
    4) restart with the bootable cd in the drive.
    5) watch as it goes through the boot process
ignore messages about a FAT or FAT16/32 HDD (hard drive)
6)when prompted to type no-1802 and press enter do just that
    and it takes seconds.

    7) once laptop has powered down install the WIFI card again.
    8) then power back up and remove boot CD

IF IT HAS WORKED there will be NO error message and it will boot into Winblows

    9) let it boot into winblows and make sure you install the drivers unless winblows see’s it first and installs the drivers for you.

    10) and that’s it… took me 10 minutes from start to finish :-)

    11) Serious kudos and shout’s to the original author/s and the info on this site.

Happy new year to you all and good luck :-)

  414. The Ideapad S10-2 has the same issue; it doesn’t put an 1802 in front of the error message. But it seems there’s no way to get a Draft-N card in there, since it comes with only a b/g card.

  415. Thanks very much for this fix. I have just fixed an IBM Thinkpad X31 which amazingly had worked for two years and then one day decided to come up with the 1802 error. Great fix and this is what makes the Internet such a great place when you get people who publish fixes like this.
    Thanks again.
    Mike

  416. It works perfectly on a Thinkpad T40. Thank you! I had been searching for days to the solution. People talked about it; but I didn’t get any concrete solutions.

    Recap of steps:

    1. Preparation:
    a) Download the CD .iso file.
    b) Burn the .iso file to a bootable CD.
    2. Perform BIOS Change for cards not yet installed:
    a) Boot to the CD
    b) At the A:> prompt; type no-1802.com
    c) Remove the CD, power-down and remove main battery
    d) Install the mini-PCI card
    e) Boot and load wireless drivers
    3. Cards Already Installed:
    a) Boot PC and enter BIOS
    b) Disable the wireless card & save changes
    c) Perform steps 2a and 2b; reboot, enable wireless card in BIOS
    d) Perform step 2e

  422. I am trying on a R40 with i2200. I removed the wireless card and booted from the CD but getting error about 64kb in upper memory not available and to set frame=none but cannot change any settings.

Any ideas what I can do?

  425. Thanks,
I managed to get a Gigabit Wireless Nic working on a T30.
    The only problem was:
I had to remove the nic first and then ran the CD
After that I reinstalled the nic and started the T30, I’m running Ubuntu 9.04 (the T30 won’t work with 9.10 so far) and the nic was recognised at the start, without installing any driver. Great!
The only thing, but that might be a nic-problem: I only get 73% while my HP tc4200 tablet gets 93% and he is right beside the T30

  426. I want say a VERY BIG THANKS!!!! to you for providing this..
