I feel your pain (same situation here)
1. Consider alternatives: Buy external DVD, try zapping PRAM, hack your firmware for region free (it cannot get worse), ...
2. Gather info about Intel iMac disassembly (this is the hardest mac to service ever, 17) iMac G5 is a beauty in comparison. (start here http://home.comcast.net/~woojo/DFFA53A0-F23D-4541-9015-481FD3B6532E/iMac_Disassembly.html)
3. Buy both DVD and HD (you'll probably will not want to open it again) :)
4. Get a list of tested 3rd party DVD drives (start with http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso)
Easiest bet is UJ-875-S (used in other macs) Theoretically most drives will work.
5. Gather tools, prepare yourself to deal with glue, sensors, hard to remove parts ...I am still not in the "go state" (but I´ll probably do it in a few weeks-months). I wanted to change my DVD since the day I got it ...

@Leo<br

My intel iMac superdrive stops working (it just pops out every CD or DVD I tried to read) and Panasonic site says that model is discontinued...Apple retailers on my city offer the original UJ-846, but it's $300...I could buy a blue-ray drive for that price!

Will this work on a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 (FB2U). Check out my article on "integrating" a $35 dual-layer lightscribe dvd burner at StorageMojo.Cheers,Robin

Another option: external drive.
