Blogging for MacUser

Not long ago, Macworld blog MacUser publicly requested some additional help, and today I’ll be officially joining their blogging team. I hope to bring the similar content to MacUser as I’ve been publishing here for the last year and a half.

I’ll try and keep Command-Tab updated as well, still featuring hacks, Mac tech, iPod tips, Xbox mods and more. Most of the topics I’ve covered have proven to be of great interest, and I hope to continue in the same fashion.

As if I didn’t already have enough on my plate, I’m working up some ideas for starting a repair business for out-of-warranty iPods, offering repairs, trade-ins (including broken ones), and fixed devices. If there’s significant interest, I may get this going sooner rather than later. Hopefully my archive of iPod tips and hacks will convince anyone of my dedication and interest in working with those little white jukeboxes.

All of this blogging and hacking is in addition to my day job, which, not surprisingly, involves even more hacking and hardware. I’ll do my best to keep everything rolling as smoothly as possible.

Xbox Media Center 2.0

After a long bug-bash, Xbox Media Center 2.0 is out, and I’ve been testing it over the last few days. All its features are working and polished just right: video streams perfectly, even over wireless; DVD menus are enabled; Last.fm submission support is built-in; Project Mayhem III and MediaCenter360 skins are installed by default; and much more! To learn how to set up XBMC 2.0, check out the online manual wiki or stay tuned for Part 3 of Mac meet Xbox right here at Command-Tab.

New Theme in Action

The new Command-Tab theme is in place! Going from Photoshop to HTML/CSS/PHP took only several hours, so there are bound to be some bugs just around the corners. (Yes, I know it looks horribly broken in IE6.) Please do comment here if you find something, and I’ll go about fixing it.

10/9/2006 Update
SpotlightSiteSearch and other graphical additions I created in the past are currently disabled as I plan to upgrade them for better browser compatibility in the near future.

Mac Mini for Sale

With the impending Core 2 Duo update to the MacBook Pro (and possibly MacBook) line, I’ll be selling a computer or two to make room for a new laptop. The first one to go is my Mac Mini. It’s specs are as follows:

  • 1.42 GHz PowerPC processor
  • Upgraded to 1 GB RAM (Crucial memory)
  • Upgraded to 8X DVD±R DL (Pioneer DVR-K06, officially Apple supported as of Mac OS X 10.4.6)
  • 40 GB HD
  • Mac OS X 10.4.8

The Mac Mini is in good cosmetic condition, with no scratches or dents. If you’d like any upgrades done, they can be added prior to shipping.

If you’re interested, email me at collin [at] command-tab [dot] com.

10/2/06 Update
Why sell now? MacBook Pros were released nearly 8 months ago, and last revised 5 months ago. If Apple’s sticking to their general 6-month schedule, then new models should be ready in the near future. This is also not counting the fact that Dell and other PC manufacturers are already shipping Core 2 Duo machines…

10/13/06 Update
Still for sale! $400 shipped within the U.S.

10/23/06 Update
Sold! Thanks to all those who emailed!
