My DH has made some pressure-sensitive Photoshop brushes of his own for achieving the wicked worn look. He wanted something more random than using the brushes that are huge stamps. I've linked his site to my name.

Don't rest on your laurels with Machine Wash filters, they are a great tool and there are plenty more if you search for Photoshop brushes with words like dirty, gritty, grunge, etc. Those in combination with a light use of MW will help an authentic look.
